Kupfer said there were no plans to bring the new pill U.S. market, but that if the FDA made an exception for patients in need of treatment, the company might reconsider.
There is no shortage of sleep pills in the United States. According to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, there are more than 300 different prescription sleep aids sold in the U.S.
The Drug Enforcement Administration said earlier this month that it had seized nearly 2,800 sleeping pill packages at five retailers across the country last week.

The drug's manufacturer, Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories of Philadelphia, said in a statement that it "has been the industry leader in sleep management since we introduced it in 1993.... We are conducting an internal review of the information reported earlier today by the DEA on our products and are addressing the issues raised. FDA has not asked us to stop manufacturing the product or recall it. We believe that all Ambien sold in the U.S. is safe and effective."
